– Therese Rein, wife of Kevin Rudd (a weird as hell interview)
If Gillard can stay as transparent and genuine as she was in her press conference this morning then we may just enjoy a much stronger Labor Party and much less complaining from people who don’t really know what’s going on.
Gillard must be feeling great this morning to finally get so much off her chest.

“my family are Liberal and I’m concerned about their thoughts so I support Liberal.”
Kristy Micallef, 21, from Penrith.
And hopefully they’ll win the Grand Final this year goooooo Liberalss!
Are 'boat people' an issue?
I just read a short column in the telegraph describing the highlights and lowlights of Rudd and Gillard’s PM careers (which I am fairly sure was put together hastily by a 15 year old).
Among Rudd’s lowlights was the dismantling of the Pacific Solution, which triggered the ‘return of asylum seeker boats.’
But why was the dismantling of the Pacific Solution a bad thing?...

A trip to centrelink is never just a trip to...
Case in point:
I had to go to centrelink to hand in a form.
What unfolded:
The form required details of my bank account. After an hour on the phone the details were acquired.
I still needed an ATM receipt with my account balance. I parked out the front of the Sutherland ATMs in a 15 minute zone and got the receipt. When I got in the car, it wouldn’t start. ‘okay, no big deal,...

I can see this happening to every politician, on both sides of the field. I wonder if they’ll try and do something to bring it under control.

Leader problems
For the past fortnight or so now, Gillard’s leadership abilities have come under scrutiny. Many, even within the Labor party, question if booting Rudd was a bad decision. There are three problems with this issue:
1. Labor (obviously) want to remain in power. Several of their policies and compromises reflect this. How will another leadership change make their party look? There is no way...

Closing The Gap
It would appear from Tony Abbott’s recent statement that the Liberal Party at least aims to close the wealth disparity gap (which is inherently part of the Aboriginal cultural and welfare issue). The Republicans however, seem to have no intention of doing this.
Obama Considering Slashing U.S. Nuclear Force By... →
talkstraight:
The Obama administration is weighing options for sharp new cuts to the U.S. nuclear force, including a reduction of up to 80 percent in the number of deployed weapons, The Associated Press has learned.
Even the most modest option now under consideration would be an historic and politically bold disarmament step in a presidential election year, although the plan is in line with...
An article in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader says NAPLAN results showed ‘positive signs of student improvement across several student groups’.
While on the surface this sounds like good news, the reality is more complex. Other student learning is pushed aside for the sake of mastering NAPLAN. Students are essentially rote learning, heatedly competing with the schools...

Crocodile hunting will be a step back in wildlife...
The arguments for allowing crocodile safari hunting are primarily potential economical gain and benefits the policy could bring for Aboriginal people (who can already hunt crocodiles, but cannot sell them). However, the small amount of money it could generate would do no good.
Trophy hunting is wrong, flat out. It is blood-sport, and it is disrespectful.
Further, there are other avenues for...

The Diamond Myth: How Diamonds Became a Girl's...
If you haven’t heard the story before, you’ve gotta read this.
Republicans have criticised Obama for his revision of contraception laws, saying he is backing down, being deceptive, yada yada.
What Obama did is called compromise, and it’s the Republican party’s foreignness to this concept that makes the idea of them running the US so worrying.
If the US is run by a government unwilling to compromise, there will be more wars in the Middle East. A...
I am the most awkward person in the world. (Warning, This isn’t actually interesting. I just need to vent).
Pretty much turn to jelly when I run into people I knew from school. Why? I’m perfectly capable of maintaining a conversation elsewhere. But a school friend?

them: ‘Hey’
both: ‘How are you?’ (said by both people at the same...
Nothing new under the sun.
I saw the tears of the oppressed -
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their
oppressors -
and they have no comforter.
And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.
But better than both
is he who has not yet been,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.

Alabama State Senator Thinks Increasing Teacher... →
reagan-was-a-horrible-president:
According to Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill (R), the Bible says that increasing teacher salaries would only lead to less-qualified teachers. McGill said at a prayer breakfast that doubling teachers’ salaries — starting pay for Alabama teachers begins at $36,144 — would not help education. In fact, he said that keeping teacher pay low is a “Biblical...

The problem with journalism is that people are more interested in reading about an increasing trend in men wearing pink shirts than politics or stock markets. From that issue every other issue flows.

Lego man in space: one (very) small step
Two teenagers from Toronto sent a Lego man carrying a Canadian flag into the stratosphere. Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, attached four cameras to a balloon carrying the toy astronaut 24km above Earth. A week after launch they recovered their Lego man in a field,...
